かえる君はママの忠告を振り切ってお出かけし、ネズミさんたちと楽しく遊んでいるうちに、ネコさんやアヒルさんに食べられてしまうという恐ろしい物語です。こんな物語を聞かせることで、動物たちの食物連鎖を子どもたちに教えていたのでしょうね。

ハイホー！と合いの手が出てくるのは、物語の中に、子どもたちが参加している光景です。

　　Since you have a cold, Mr. Frog, Mousey said,

　　But while they were all a-merry-making

　　A cat and her kittens came tumbling in.
