六ペンスの歌を歌おう Sing a song of sixpence ：マザーグース

　　焼けたパイをふたつに割ると
　　ツグミが出てきて歌を歌った
　　これなるおいしいお料理は
　　王様に召し上がっていただくため

　　王様は金庫の中に引きこもり
　　お金を勘定していました
　　女王様は台所で
　　ハチミツパンを食べていました

　　庭のほうではお手伝いさんが
　　洗濯物を干していました
　　そこへツグミが下りていって
　　お手伝いさんの鼻を引っかきました

六ペンスは1シリングの半分ですから、日本で言えば5円玉のようなものです。それでポケットいっぱいのライ麦を買い、ツグミの肉を入れてパイを作ろうという歌です。

でも折角出来上がったパイを、王様も女王様も食べてくれません。パイになったツグミはその腹いせに、庭で洗濯物を干していたお手伝いさんの鼻を引っかいてしまいます。ユーモラスな話ですね。

　　When the pie was opened,
　　the birds began to sing.
　　Wasn't that a dainty dish
　　to set before the king?

　　The king was in his counting house,
　　counting out his money.
　　The queen was in the parlour,
　　eating bread and honey.

　　The maid was in the garden,
　　hanging out the clothes,
　　When down came a blackbird
　　and pecked off her nose!
