シェイクスピアのソネット73　 That time of year

　　君が見るのは一日のうちの黄昏時
　　日が西に沈みつつ光を失い
　　徐々に暗い夜が昼を押しのけ
　　死の片割れの闇がすべてを安楽のうちに閉ざす

　　君が見るのは残り火の光
　　燃え尽きた灰を死の床として横たわり
　　その上で消えていかなければならない
　　かつてはそこで燃え盛っていたというのに
　　　　こんな私を見て君の愛はますます強まり
　　　　やがて別れねばならないものを愛おしく思うのだ

詩人の詩を暗示する一連の詩の中で、これは自分を人生のたそがれ時、季節で言えば冬にあるものと喩えている。詩人はすでに人生の終わりに差し掛かっているのだから、そんな自分を見ても、決して取り乱さないで欲しいと歌う。

だがこれが書かれたのは1600年の頃とされ、そうだとすればシェイクスピアはまだ36才だったはずだ。人生の終わりというには早いというべきである。

愛の弱さと強さを表現する際の、シェイクスピア一流の修辞法なのだろう。

　　That time of year thou mayst in me behold
　　When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
　　Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
　　Bare ruin'd choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.

　　In me thou seest the twilight of such day
　　As after sunset fadeth in the west,
　　Which by and by black night doth take away,
　　Death's second self, that seals up all in rest.

　　In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire
　　That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
　　As the death-bed whereon it must expire
　　Consumed with that which it was nourish'd by.
　　　　This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,
　　　　To love that well which thou must leave ere long.
