シェイクスピアのソネット98 From you

　　だが鳥たちの歌声を聞いても　
　　色も香もとりどりな花の匂いをかいでも
　　私はさわやかな話をする気になれなかったし
　　ほころびた花を摘み取る気になれなかった

　　白い百合の花を見ても心動かず
　　深紅のバラを見ても素敵だと思わなかった
　　それらはただ甘いだけ　その姿は君を真似しているだけだ
　　君はあらゆるもののお手本なのだから
　　　　私にはまだ冬のままに思える　だから君がいないなら
　　　　これらを君の影だと思って戯れ遊ぼう

青年のいない春が、どんなに味気ないか、鳥が笑い、花々が匂い咲き、サターンでさえ浮かれて踊りだしても、自分にはそれを享受することができぬ、それは愛するものが近くにいないからなのだと、詩人は歌う。

春のイメージは拡散して、第七句目では夏が姿を覗かせるまでになるが、詩人は相変わらず冬のままだと嘆く。そしてせめてそれらが、愛するものの影だと思って自分を慰めようとするのだ。

シェイクスピアのソネットの中でも、もっとも素直に読めるもののひとつだろう。

　　From you have I been absent in the spring,
　　When proud-pied April dress'd in all his trim
　　Hath put a spirit of youth in every thing,
　　That heavy Saturn laugh'd and leap'd with him.

　　Yet nor the lays of birds nor the sweet smell
　　Of different flowers in odour and in hue
　　Could make me any summer's story tell,
　　Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew;
