狂気の歌 Mad Song：ウィリアム・ブレイク

　　見よ！どんよりした空の
　　天上へ向かって
　　悲しみをまといながら
　　私の調べが舞い上っていく
　　夜の耳を打ち
　　昼の目に涙させ
　　吠え立てる風を狂わせ
　　嵐と戯れつつ

　　雲に隠れた悪霊のように
　　苦悩にうめきつつ
　　夜の後を追いかけ
　　夜と共に行こう
　　東に背中を向けるのは
　　そこから慰藉が押し寄せるからだ
　　光が脳をとらえると
　　苦痛で狂いそうになる

この詩は昼の光を嫌い、夜の暗闇を愛する歌だ。光は本来慰謝をもたらすものなのに、詩人にとっては苦痛の種。だから狂気の歌というのであろうが、その狂気がブレイクにとって何を意味しているかは、詩の内容を深読みする以外にない。

Mad Song

　　The wild winds weep,
　　And the night is a-cold;
　　Come hither, Sleep,
　　And my griefs enfold:
　　But lo! the morning peeps
　　Over the eastern steeps,
　　And the rustling birds of dawn
　　The earth do scorn.

　　Lo! to the vault
　　Of pavèd heaven,
　　With sorrow fraught
　　My notes are driven:
　　They strike the ear of night,
　　Make weep the eyes of day;
　　They make mad the roaring winds,
　　And with tempests play.

　　Like a fiend in a cloud,
　　With howling woe
　　After night I do crowd,
　　And with night will go;
　　I turn my back to the east
　　From whence comforts have increas'd
　　For light doth seize my brain
　　With frantic pain.
