キューピッド Why was Cupid a boy：ウィリアム・ブレイク

　　男の子は矢を放つ
　　女の子は視線を放つ
　　二人とも陽気で楽しく
　　人間が叫ぶのを見て笑う

　　キューピッドを男の子にしたのは
　　女の子の陰謀だったのさ
　　男の子は察しが悪いもんだから
　　大人になるまで気づかないんだ

　　男の子は大人になると恋の病の
　　弓矢の傷みにさいなまれる
　　愛の矢を頭から引き抜くのに
　　全身全霊余念がなくなる

　　これはギリシャの戦争の神が
　　愛の使いを男の子にした話
　　女の子は石の像に変わったおかげで
　　どんな喜びとも縁がないのさ

キューピッドは普通、盲目の少年として描かれる。少年は弓と矢を持ち、恋の火花が散るところに現れて、いたずらをする。なぜキューピッドが少年で、しかも盲目でなければならぬのか、ブレイクはこの詩の中で、自分なりの解釈を施しているようだ。

Why was Cupid a boy

　　Why was Cupid a boy,
　　And why a boy was he?
　　He should have been a girl,
　　For aught that I can see.

　　For he shoots with his bow,
　　And the girl shoots with her eye,
　　And they both are merry and glad,
　　And laugh when we do cry.

　　And to make Cupid a boy
　　Was the Cupid girl's mocking plan;
　　For a boy can't interpret the thing
　　Till he is become a man.

　　And then he's so pierc'd with cares,
　　And wounded with arrowy smarts,
　　That the whole business of his life
　　Is to pick out the heads of the darts.

　　'Twas the Greeks' love of war
　　Turn'd Love into a boy,
　　And woman into a statue of stone--
　　And away fled every joy.
