ウィリアム・B・イェイツの詩集「薔薇」から「年をとったら」When You Are Old（壺齋散人訳）
年をとってまどろみがちになったら
暖炉のそばで この本を手に取り
ゆっくり読みながら 思い起こしてごらん
自分が若かった頃の瞳の耀きを
多くの男たちが若いお前を愛した
時には偽りから 時には真心から
だが年をとっていくお前の悲しそうな顔を
愛した男はひとりだけだった
燃え盛る薪のそばに身をかがめて
すこし悲しそうにつぶやいてごらん
その愛も山の彼方へ逃げ去って
星屑の中に消えてしまったと
老いて後もなお愛が可能なのかを歌った詩だ。フランス16世紀の詩人ピエール・ド・ロンサールのソネット "Quand Vous Serez Bien Vieille," を下敷きにしている。
詩の中の One man と Love とは同一のものと取れる。それはほかでもないエロスのことだ。
When You Are Old
WHEN you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face among a crowd of stars.
