ベン・ブルベンの禿山の麓
ドラムクリフ教会の墓地にイェイツは眠る
祖先はこの教区の司祭だった
遠い昔のことだ
近くの道端には教会の古い十字架がたっている
大理石もいらぬ 常套句も無用
付近で切り出された石灰岩に
故人の意思により次の言葉を刻む
生と死を
冷めた視線で見よ
旅人よ 速やかに去れ
生前に自分のための墓碑銘を作る詩人は多い。イェイツもまたそれを書いた。
ベン・ブルベンはアイルランド北部のスライゴ地方にある山。イェイツは自分の故郷であるこの地に埋めてもらいたいと願った。

Under bare Ben Bulben's head
In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid.
An ancestor was rector there
Long years ago, a church stands near,
By the road an ancient cross.
No marble, no conventional phrase;
On limestone quarried near the spot
By his command these words are cut:
Cast a cold eye
On life, on death.
Horseman, pass by!
