美術館 Musee des Beaux Arts：W.H.オーデン

　　老人たちがうやうやしい熱意を持って
　　奇跡の子の誕生を待ち望んでいる間にも
　　そんなことにはおかまいなしの子どもたちがいて
　　森のはずれの池でスケートをしている

　　そうだ
　　恐ろしい殉教に赴くためにさえ
　　ひとはありふれた　時に汚らしい道を通らねばならぬ
　　そこでは犬らが惨めな暮らしをし
　　拷問屋の馬が何も知らずに背中を木にこすり付けている

　　試みにブリューゲルのイカロスの絵を見てみたまえ
　　なにもかものんびりとして誰も殉教者の災難を省みはしない
　　農夫はイカロスが墜落して悲鳴を上げたのが
　　聞こえたかもしれない
　　だが彼にとってそんなことはどうでもよいのだ
　　太陽は相変わらず緑の海に突っ込んだイカロスの脚を照らしている
　　海上を行く豪華な船も
　　空から落ちてきた少年の驚くべき様子を見たに違いないのに
　　何事もなかったように航海を続けるのだ

ブリュッセルの美術館を訪れたときの印象がもとになっているらしい。人間の中に潜む不条理について、ブリューゲルや昔の巨匠たちの絵を引き合いに出して、語っているこの詩は、オーデンの社会的な関心が伺われる作品のひとつだ。

　　About suffering they were never wrong,
　　The Old Masters: how well they understood
　　Its human position; how it takes place
　　While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully
　　along;
　　How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
　　For the miraculous birth, there always must be
　　Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
　　On a pond at the edge of the wood:
　　They never forgot
　　That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
　　Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
　　Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
　　Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
　　In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
　　Quite leisurely from the disaster; the plowman may
　　Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
　　But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
　　As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
　　Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
　　Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
　　Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
