　　善悪の彼岸をこえて
　　見果てぬ夢を見続ける連中

　　かとおもえば火の玉のように燃える戦士たち

　　嵐のような勢いで魔王の名を叫び
　　剣と剣とをあわせては

この詩はイェイツの作詩の過程で現れたイメージを語ったものだ。ダナアンはアイルランドのキリスト教以前における旧い神のこと。その周囲にはさまざまな妖精や奇怪な動物たちのイメージが付きまとう。

ダナアンをテーマにすることで、アイルランドの自治と独立を鼓舞することが、初期のイェイツのひとつの生き方になっていた。
