ウィリアム・B・イェイツの詩集「螺旋階段」 The Winding Stair から「死」Death（壺齋散人訳）
死にゆく動物は
恐怖も希望も持たぬ
人間は死を前にして
なお恐怖し希望する
人間は幾たびも死に
幾たびも生まれ変わるのだ
名誉を知る偉大な男は
たとえ殺されようとしても
自分の息が絶えることを
恐れたりはしない
そのような男は知っているのだ
人間が死を作り出したと
イェイツの詩集「螺旋階段」 The Winding Stair は1929年に刊行された。「塔」の中で描いていた老いへの問いをさらに深めた作品群だ。この詩は老いの先にある死について歌っている。
