トラ
トラよ、夜の森に
火のように輝くトラよ
如何なる手 如何なる目が
汝の恐ろしき躯体を作ったか
遠く離れた海や空でも
汝の目の 炎は燃える
如何なる翼 如何なる手が
輝く炎をとらえるだろうか
如何なる力 如何なる技が
汝の勢いを制するだろうか
汝の心臓が脈打つときの
四肢の力の何たる強さぞ
汝を鍛えたハンマーにチェイン
汝の頭を鍛えた炉よ
きつく握った鉄床が
汝を恐ろしい姿に仕上げた
星々が光芒を放ち
天空を涙で潤すとき
神は自らの業を愛でられた
子羊をつくった神こそが汝の創造主なのだ

トラの勇姿を歌ったこの詩は、ブレイクの作品のなかでも最も有名なもののひとつだ。リズミカルで力強い言葉が並び、イメージも鮮烈である。だが内容は必ずしも単純なものではない。
この詩を理解するためには、単にトラのイメージを思い浮かべるだけでは不十分で、背後に流れるブレイクの思想をつかまなければならない。ブレイクには、いったん滅びた生命界が神の意思によって再創造されたという思想がある。その創造は、一方では子羊のようなものを生むとともに、トラのようなものも生んだ。
この詩は、トラそのものを歌ったというよりは、神の手によるトラの創造のほうに力点が置かれているのである。原文には God という言葉は使われず、直接神に言及することはないが、トラの恐ろしい躯体を鍛え上げる手や目に、神のイメージがこめられている。

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry
In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes!
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare sieze the fire!
