パーシー・Ｂ・シェリーの詩「萎れたスミレに」を読む。On a Faded Violet （壺齋散人訳）
萎れたスミレに
花の香りがうつろってしまった
あなたのキスのような甘い香りが
花の色があせてしまった
あなたのかんばせのような輝きが
しなびれて 命なく うつろな形が
見捨てられた私の胸に横たわる
ぬくもりのある私の胸に
冷たく そして静かにふれる
泣いたとて 花は生き返らない
ため息をついても 戻らない
ものいわず あわれげなその姿は
私の行く末を見るようだ
この詩は1818年、イタリアで書かれたものだろう。萎れたスミレに、命のはかなさと愛のもろさを歌いこんだもののように響く。詩人はその萎れた姿に、自分の死を見つめてもいる。

The odour from the flower is gone
Which like thy kisses breathed on me;
The colour from the flower is flown
Which glowed of thee and only thee !
A shrivelled, lifeless, vacant form,
It lies on my abandoned breast;
And mocks the heart, which yet is warm
With cold and silent rest.
I weep --- my tears revive it not;
I sigh --- it breathes no more on me:
Its mute and uncomplaining lot
Is such as mine should be.
