12月のわびしい夜 In drear-nighted December ：キーツ

　　12月のわびしい夜でも
　　幸せそうでいられる小川は
　　夏の盛りの頃のように
　　泡立ち流れることはないけれど
　　それでも時折は思い出して
　　水晶のような輝きを見せる
　　凍てつくような寒さの中でも
　　へこたれることがないように

　　大勢の少年少女たちにも
　　是非そうあってほしいものだ
　　けれど過ぎ去った日を惜しんで
　　悲しがらずにすむものは少ない
　　感じたくないものを感ずることは
　　誰にも慰めえないことだけに
　　他の感覚ではごまかせないだけに
　　言葉で表すのはむつかしい

単に STANZAS と題されたこの詩は、遺稿の中に残されていたものであるが、書かれたのは比較的早く、エンディミオンを書き上げた頃だろうといわれる。

冬の間は自然の厳しさに抗い、春の訪れを待つ自然の事物と対比させながら、少年少女がそのようにたくましくあって欲しいといっているのだろう。第三節の後半の4行に、この詩の思想が要約されているようだ。

　　In drear-nighted December,
　　Too happy, happy tree,
　　Thy branches ne'er remember
　　Their green felicity:
　　The north cannot undo them,
　　With a sleety whistle through them;
　　Nor frozen thawings glue them
　　From budding at the prime.

　　　　II.

　　In drear-nighted December,
　　Too happy, happy brook,
　　Thy bubblings ne'er remember
　　Apollo's summer look;
　　But with a sweet forgetting,
　　They stay their crystal fretting,
　　Never, never petting
　　About the frozen time.

　　　　III.

　　Ah! would 'twere so with many
　　A gentle girl and boy!
　　But were there ever any
　　Writh'd not of passed joy?
　　The feel of not to feel it,
　　When there is none to heal it,
　　Nor numbed sense to steel it,
　　Was never said in rhyme.
