シェイクスピアのソネット62 Sin of self-love possesseth all mine eye（壺齋散人訳）
自惚れという罪が私の目や魂
私のあらゆる部分に取り付いている
この罪は私の心に深く根を下ろし
誰も取り除くことはできない
私は思うのだ わが顔は誰よりも端正
姿は誰よりも優雅でかつ重要な存在だと
そしていかなる人も私に勝る価値を
持つものはないと自認するのだ
ところが鏡に映った自分を見ると
老いで黒ずみ打ちのめされた顔がある
そこで私は全く逆に思わざるを得ない
自惚れは邪悪なことなのだと
わたしが自惚れて称えていたのは君のことなのだ
自分の老いた身を君の美しさになぞらえていたのだ
先行する詩の中で、青年に対する嫉妬とも言うべき感情を歌っていた詩人は、この詩の中では一転して、自分の老醜を語っている。こんな老人では、青年に飽きられるのも無理はないと、半分自嘲気味だ。
しかし残りの半分では、自分が自惚れるのは、ほかならぬ君の若さを共有していると錯覚したことの結果だったのだと、開き直っている。

And all my soul and all my every part;
And for this sin there is no remedy,
It is so grounded inward in my heart.
Methinks no face so gracious is as mine,
No shape so true, no truth of such account;
And for myself mine own worth do define,

Beated and chapp'd with tann'd antiquity,
