　　ぐっすりと寝ているときは
　　どんなに工夫をしてみても
　　両目を開けさせることはできないし
　　歩くときには足を動かす
　　その上生きているためには
　　飲んだり食べたりしなけりゃならない

人間が何故両目でものを見たり、舌を動かして話すのか、当たり前ともいうべきことを、架空の夫婦に事寄せて問題にしています。生きるためにはもちろん飲んだり食べたりしなければなりませんが、なぜそうかのか、この歌は子供たちに考えさせようとしているのかもしれません。

　　When quite fast asleep,

　　They walked on their feet,
　　And 'twas thought what they eat
　　Helped, with drinking, to keep them alive
