マザーグースの歌から「二匹のネコ」There once were two cats（壺齋散人訳）
キルケニーの二匹の猫
お互いを邪魔だと思いました
それで二匹は戦いを始め
引っかいたり噛み付いたり
お互いを消してしまおうとしましたので
爪と尻尾の先のほかには
残らず消えてしまいました
お互いに相手を邪魔に思って消してしまおうとして、共倒れになってしまった愚かな猫たちの話です。人間の世界でもよく起こることです。
There once were two cats
There once were two cats of Kilkenny,
Each thought there was one cat too many,
So they fought and thy fit,
And they scratched and they bit,
Till, excepting their nails
And the tips of their tails,
Instead of two cats, there weren’t any.
