ウィリアム・ブレイク「ロゼッティ草稿」から「君は信じない」 You don't believe（壺齋散人訳）
君は信じない 私も信じてもらおうとはしない
君は寝むっている 私も起きてもらおうとはしない
さあそのまま寝ていたまえ その快適な眠りのうちで
君は命の明るい流れから理性を汲み取ることだろう
理性とニュートン この二つは異なったものだ
ツバメやスズメもそう歌っているとおり
理性はいう「奇跡だ！」 ニュートンはいう「疑え！」
そうだ それが自然を解明する道だ
「疑え 疑え 実験の結果だけを信じろ！」
こんなことならイエス・キリストも言っている
「ただ信ぜよ！信仰のうちに行え！
行え 行え 決して理由を問うことなかれ！」
ブレイクは常に、イギリスの精神世界との違和感を感じており、ことあるごとにそれとの断絶感を歌ったが、この詩もそうしたもののひとつだろう。

You don't believe -- I won't attempt to make ye:
You are asleep -- I won't attempt to wake ye.
Sleep on! sleep on! while in your pleasant dreams
Of Reason you may drink of Life's clear streams.
Reason and Newton, they are quite two things;
For so the swallow and the sparrow sings.
Reason says `Miracle': Newton says `Doubt.'
Aye! that's the way to make all Nature out.
`Doubt, doubt, and don't believe without experiment':
That is the very thing that Jesus meant,
When He said `Only believe! believe and try!
Try, try, and never mind the reason why!'
