ウィリアム・ブレイクの詩「エルサレム」を読む。（壺齋散人訳）
目覚めよ イングランド 目覚めよ！
汝の妹エルサレムが呼んでいる！
何故死の眠りにふけったまま
彼女を城壁の外に立たしておくのか？
丘や谷間には彼女の足音が響き
汝の大地をやさしく踏みしめている
汝の門はシオンへと通じている
いまや歓喜と愛の時が来たのだ
いまこそ時節はめぐりめぐって
我らの心は喜びに浮き立つ
ロンドンの家々が神の羊を
イングランドの緑の園に迎えるのだ
エルサレムはブレイクにとって、現実の土地ではなく、天国のメタファーだった。だからエルサレムをイギリスの大地に迎え入れることは、この世が開放されることを意味している。

Why wilt thou sleep the sleep of death,
And close her from thy ancient walls?
Thy hills and valleys felt her feet
Gently upon their bosoms move:
Thy gates beheld sweet Zion's ways;
Then was a time of joy and love.
And now the time returns again:
Our souls exult, and London's towers
Receive the Lamb of God to dwell
In England's green and pleasant bowers.
