こだまする野辺

　　日が昇り
　　空が明るみ
　　鐘が鳴って
　　春を迎える
　　ひばりやつぐみ
　　藪の鳥たち
　　大声で歌うよ
　　鐘の音にあわせて
　　子どもらは戯る
　　こだまする野辺に

　　オールド・ジョンは
　　愉快に笑う
　　樫の木陰で
　　仲間とともに
　　僕らを見ては
　　大人は言うんだ
　　楽しい眺めじゃ
　　子どもの頃に
　　わしらも遊んだ
　　こだまする野辺に

　　子どもたちの
　　元気がなくなり
　　日が沈むと
　　遊びは終わり
　　母親を囲んで
　　子どもたちが
　　小鳥のように
　　集まってくると
　　遊びは終わって
　　野辺も暗い

この詩は「子守の歌」と同様、子どもたちが無邪気に歌うさまを描いたもので、パストラル・ソングの要素も併せ持っている。

1節目では子どもたちの歓声、2節目では子どもたちを見守る老人たち、3節目では遊びつかれて母親のもとに帰る子どもたちが、それぞれ描かれている。

Echoing Greenとは、子どもたちの声がこだましあう、緑あふれる草原をイメージしたものだろう。

The Echoing Green William Blake

　　The sun does arise,
　　And make happy the skies;
　　The merry bells ring
　　To welcome the Spring;
　　The skylark and thrush,
　　The birds of the bush,
　　Sing louder around
　　To the bells' cheerful sound;
　　While our sports shall be seen
　　On the echoing green.

　　Old John, with white hair,
　　Does laugh away care,
　　Sitting under the oak,
　　Among the old folk.
　　They laugh at our play,
　　And soon they all say,
　　'Such, such were the joys
　　When we all--girls and boys -
　　In our youth-time were seen
　　On the echoing green.'

　　Till the little ones, weary,
　　No more can be merry:
　　The sun does descend,
　　And our sports have an end.
　　Round the laps of their mothers
　　Many sisters and brothers,
　　Like birds in their nest,
　　Are ready for rest,
　　And sport no more seen
　　On the darkening green.
