ウィリアム・ブレイク「天国と地獄の結婚」The Marriage of Heaven and Hellから序詞を読む。（壺齋散人訳）
リントラが吼え 重苦しい空に火を吹き上げる
飢えた雲が海面に垂れ込める
かつては温厚だった正しき人が
今は死の谷に沿った
危険な道を行く
茨の生えたところにバラを植え
不毛の荒地にも
ミツバチが歌う
危険な道に草木が生じ
あらゆる崖や墓場にも
川が流れ 泉が湧く
干からびた白骨からは
赤い土が噴き出した
すると安楽の道にいた悪人が
危険な道にやって来て
正しき人を不毛の地に追いやった
いまやこっそりしのび歩く蛇が
へりくだりながら入ってくる
正しき人は怒りの声をあげた
ライオンが咆哮する荒野に
リントラが吼え 重苦しい空に火を吹き上げる
飢えた雲が海面に垂れ込める
この作品は1790年から1793年にかけて書かれた。つまりフランス革命の影響が生々しかった時期である。ブレイクはこの詩の中に、革命の精神を歌い込んだのだと思われている。
この序詞を除けば、散文とイラストで構成されている。
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
Rintrah roars, and shakes his fires in the burden'd air;
Hungry clouds swag on the deep.
Once meek, and in a perilous path,
The just man kept his course along
The vale of death.
Roses are planted where thorns grow,
And on the barren heath
Sing the honey bees.
Then the perilous path was planted,
And a river and a spring
On every cliff and tomb,
And on the bleachèd bones
Red clay brought forth;
Till the villain left the paths of ease,
To walk in perilous paths, and drive
The just man into barren climes.
Now the sneaking serpent walks
In mild humility,
And the just man rages in the wilds
Where lions roam.
