いまなお穢れなき静寂の花嫁よ
沈黙と悠久の養女よ
森の歴史家でもあるお前は
誰よりもやさしく花物語を語る
お前が神であれ人間であれ
お前の姿にはテンペあるいはアルカディアの谷の
緑に縁取られた伝説が付き添う
お前に描かれたものは 男か神か 拒絶する乙女たちか
狂おしき狩の追跡か 逃れようとする獣のあがきか
ラッパと太鼓 荒々しい陶酔か
耳に響くメロディに増して 沈黙のメロディは甘い
それ故描かれたラッパたちよ
耳にではなく心に向けて吹き鳴らせ
音を伴わぬ旋律を
木陰なる青年よ お前は歌を忘れえず
木々もまた常に緑であることを忘れない
恋する青年よ お前は競技に勝っても
乙女の接吻をもらえぬのを 嘆くなかれ
乙女は消え去ることなく 永遠に若きままに
お前の愛を受け止め続けるのだから
幸福な枝々よ お前たちは葉を落とすことなく
春に別れを告げることもない
そよぐ音は幸せなメロディとなって
永遠に歌い続けるのだ
それは幸せな 更に幸せな愛
なぜなら常に暖かくかつ静かで
常に何かを追い求め 若々しくいられるからだ
人間のはかない情動を超越し
悲しみにくれた心や 燃える額
舌の渇きなどに係わりをもたない
生贄のために連れて行かれるのは誰だ？
おお神秘の僧侶よ いかなる緑の祭壇に
悲しげに泣きながら わき腹を綱でしばられた
これらの雌羊たちを連れて行くのだ？
川沿いや海辺の小さな町
また山中に建てられた砦には
何故人がいないのか この平和な朝に？
小さな町の通りは永遠に静まり返り
誰一人として そのわけを
答えるために戻って来ることはない
アッチカ風の形 上品な風情に
大理石の青年や乙女が彫りこまれ
木々の枝や踏みしだかれた草が描かれている
その静かな形は見るものを慰め
永遠の感情に包んでくれる 冷たい田園の光景よ！
人間たちの古い世代が滅び去っても
お前はそのままに生き続ける
そして友として人間にいうのだ
“美は真 真は美 それがすべて
汝らが知り また知っておらねばならぬことだ“と
1819年に書かれたこの作品は、キーツにとっての最高傑作とされているものの一つである。
キーツは、ギリシャ壺を目の前において、そこに施されたたさまざまな絵や彫刻をみながら、それらが喚起するイメージをそのまま美しい言葉に置き換えている。
キーツにとって、理想的な美が転回する世界がそこにはあった。またそれは滅びやすい人間の世界と異なり、永遠に滅びることのない美であった。
最後に壺が人間に向かって語りかけている言葉は、美そのものが壺の形をかりて語っていると解釈できる。キーツはこれと同じような言葉を、エンディミオンの冒頭部でも使っているが、それは美こそ詩人が追い求めるべき真の対象なのだという、キーツの確信を表明している言葉なのである。

Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness,
Thou foster-child of Silence and slow Time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fringed legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
What men or gods are these? What maidens loth?
What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear'd,
Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
Though winning near the goal—yet, do not grieve;
She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss,
For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
Ah, happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed
Your leaves, nor ever bid the Spring adieu;
And, happy melodist, unwearièd,
For ever piping songs for ever new;
More happy love! more happy, happy love!
For ever warm and still to be enjoy'd,
For ever panting, and for ever young;
All breathing human passion far above,
That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloy'd,
A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.
Who are these coming to the sacrifice?
To what green altar, O mysterious priest,
Lead'st thou that heifer lowing at the skies,
And all her silken flanks with garlands drest?
What little town by river or sea-shore,
Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
Is emptied of its folk, this pious morn?
And, little town, thy streets for evermore
Will silent be; and not a soul, to tell
Why thou art desolate, can e'er return.
O Attic shape! fair attitude! with brede
Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
With forest branches and the trodden weed;
Thou, silent form! dost tease us out of thought
As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
' Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
