シェイクスピアのソネット91 Some glory in their birth, some in their skill（壺齋散人訳）
ある者は家柄を誇り ある者は技術を誇る
ある者は富を ある者は体力を
ある者は俗悪とはいえ衣装を誇り
ある者は鷹や犬や あるいは馬を誇る
どんな気質にも相応の楽しみがあり
そこに無上の喜びを感ずるものだ
だがこれら個別のことがらは私には用はない
それらを超えた包括的な楽しみを私は尊ぶのだ
君の愛こそ私にとっては家柄に勝り
富より豊かで どんな衣装より豪華なのだ
君の愛は鷹や馬より大きな喜びをもたらす
君はどんなものにも勝る自慢の種なのだ
なのに私はひとりぼっちで打ちひしがれている
君は私から何もかも取り上げてしまったのだ
この詩において、詩人は青年が何者にも勝る喜びであることを高らかに歌い上げる。だがその喜びの対象である青年は、生きた人間として、者や動物とは違って、自分のいいなりのままではいない。かえって、自分から何もかもをとりあげて、空っぽにしてしまうことさえあるのだ。

Some glory in their birth, some in their skill,
Some in their wealth, some in their bodies' force,
Some in their garments, though new-fangled ill,
Some in their hawks and hounds, some in their horse;
And every humour hath his adjunct pleasure,
Wherein it finds a joy above the rest:
But these particulars are not my measure;
All these I better in one general best.
Thy love is better than high birth to me,
Richer than wealth, prouder than garments' cost,
Of more delight than hawks or horses be;
And having thee, of all men's pride I boast:
Wretched in this alone, that thou mayst take
All this away and me most wretched make.
