馬鹿にされてもかまわないから
わたしはまぼろしについて語った
普通のひとにどう受け取られるか
そんなことはどうでもよかった
大胆であれ 狡猾であれ
世人の目など取るにも足りない
十五もの幻をわたしは見たんだ
一番すごいのはハンガーに引っかかったコートだった
わたしの習い性となっている
孤独ほど心地よいものはない
夜通し独りで過ごすのは快適だ
そばに友人がいたとしても
わたしを邪魔するようなことはしない
たとえわたしを不可解だと思っても
十五もの幻をわたしは見たんだ
一番すごいのはハンガーに引っかかったコートだった
男は年をとるにつれ
喜びは日に日に深くなり
ついには空虚な心が満たされる
だが年寄りには力が必要だ
神秘と恐怖の種をまく
あの膨張する夜を乗り切るためには
十五もの幻をわたしは見たんだ
一番すごいのはハンガーに引っかかったコートだった
老人の幻想をテーマにした詩だ。老人が見た幻のイメージが、リフレーンとして繰り返される。
The Apparitions
Because there is safety in derision
I talked about an apparition,
I took no trouble to convince,
Or seem plausible to a man of sense.
Distrustful of that popular eye
Whether it be bold or sly.
Fifteen apparitions have I seen;
The worst a coat upon a coat-hanger.
I have found nothing half so good
As my long-planned half solitude,
Where I can sit up half the night
With some friend that has the wit
Not to allow his looks to tell
When I am unintelligible.
