雲雀に寄す

　　天空の吟遊詩人　大空の巡礼者よ
　　お前が地上を避けるのは　不安が多い故か
　　それとも羽ばたき舞いつつ　心と目は
　　地上に残した巣に注がれているのか
　　そこへとお前は意のままに舞い降りる
　　震える翼をたたみ　さえずりをひそめ

　　山を飛び越え姿の消える瞬間まで
　　向こう見ずにもさえずり続けるものよ
　　お前は一瞬も巣を忘れない
　　羽ばたきは草むらを揺るがしながら
　　お前の歌声は　誇り高い巡礼者よ　
　　春の野辺に響き渡る

　　森の繁みはナイチンゲールにまかせ
　　輝く大空に羽ばたけ
　　神々しい本能のままに
　　世界を歌声で満たせ
　　歩くことなく高々と舞い飛ぶ賢者
　　天地の間を行き交うものよ

「雲雀に寄す」To a Skylark と題した詩としては、1805年のものと1825年に書かれたこの作品がある。前者ではひばりの飛翔によせて、自分も一緒に飛んでみたいという、詩人の願望が歌われているが、この詩は、地上の視点からひばりの自由な飛翔をたたえている。

To the Skylark -William Wordsworth

　　ETHEREAL minstrel! pilgrim of the sky!
　　Dost thou despise the earth where cares abound?
　　Or while the wings aspire, are heart and eye
　　Both with thy nest upon the dewy ground?
　　Thy nest which thou canst drop into at will,
　　Those quivering wings composed, that music still!

　　To the last point of vision, and beyond
　　Mount, daring warbler!—that love-prompted strain
　　-Twixt thee and thine a never-failing bond—
　　Thrills not the less the bosom of the plain:
　　Yet might’st thou seem, proud privilege! to sing
　　All independent of the leafy Spring.

　　Leave to the nightingale her shady wood;
　　A privacy of glorious light is thine,
　　Whence thou dost pour upon the world a flood
　　Of harmony, with instinct more divine;
　　Type of the wise, who soar, but never roam—
　　True to the kindred points of Heaven and Home.
